January Meeting Minutes
Peninsula Watermedia Society of Virginia
January 2014 Minutes
The first 2014 meeting of PWSVA took place on January 26 at the Charles Taylor Art Center. 15 people were present. The meeting was called to order at 2:30.
Challenges: Jon circulated a list of possible challenge topics and asked participants to indicate which ones interested them by initialing the list. He would select the most popular ones.
VWS Announcements: The 35th Virginia Watercolor Society Exhibition will take place in Lynchburg, Submission deadline was February 7. The membership mailing address of the organization is now in Williamsburg and dues must be paid by January 31 to enter show.
Membership: the current membership on the website is 72. The website costs $34.38 semiannually and contributions to help with the payment are welcome.
2014 Meetings: Participants discussed meeting plans for 2014.
1. Location: Suggestions included alternating between Hampton and Williamsburg. Mike Kravchak announced that the Yorktown Arts Foundation's new gallery is expected to open in mid-March. Volunteers to help with the space are welcome. Classroom space suitable for meetings will be available and it would be a suitable place for a PWSVA show. Mike's contact information 757-877-6647 (H), 757-329-0855 (C).
2. Challenges vs. demos. Having fewer demonstrations and more opportunities to present challenges and discuss techniques was a popular idea.
3. Fewer meetings. Having a meeting every other month was discussed.
4. Continuing to meet monthly January through October, but alternating responsibility between several volunteer participants was generally liked. Ann offered to coordinate the schedule of people responsible for the year's meetings. The following schedule was agreed to:
February: Ann M. Topic: challenges you are giving yourself for the coming year.
March: Sharon J. Topic: TBA
April: Jon M. Topic: meet at Yorktown (New Gallery mentioned above)?
May: Doris R. Topic: bring what you are reading about art and share ideas.
June: Jon M. Topic: demonstration
July-September to be determined at the May/June meetings.
October: Jon M. Topic: End of year potluck at either CHTAC or other location TBD
5. Demonstrations: Vonnie Whitworth was suggested. Ann asked her, and she respectfully declined due to her schedule. Amy Snowden and Jim Dees were mentioned.
Sterling Edwards will be giving workshops in Virginia Beach.
6. Topic suggestion: many people wanted to bring just what they are working on regardless of the challenge for that month.
Field Trips:
1. Film: Jon announced that the film—the Monuments Men will open on February 7 at the Regal Cinema or AMC theaters. A group trip was discussed for February 10. The group chose AMC. Many books have been written on the topic . 2. A possible Plein Air was discussed. 3. A trip to PFAC to see the Impressionist exhibit was discussed.
Adjournment: 3;30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Moore, Secretary
