PWSVA Next Meeting June 24th

at 2pm at The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, Hampton VA.
Challenge for June: Gardens of Delight 0R Journal for at least a week, longer if possible.
This months challenge give you two options. Gardens of delight: do a painting from yours or another garden. The second choice is based from May's demonstration by artist and author Teresa Roberts Logan. Teresa talked to us about Journaling and how it can help stimulate creativity, relieve stress, focus one's thoughts, and generally benefit mankind! Either option is fine. If you feel so inclined, you can even do BOTH!!
If you do the journal option please bring your journal to share with the group in June. If you opt to do a painting bring it too!

PWSVA May 2012 Meeting Summary

Demonstration by: Teresa Roberts Logan.
From her website:She is a Reuben Award-nominated cartoonist who has made her living with her art and wit for eons. She also loves teaching art and leading workshops in various art media. Her book of cartoons from Andrews McMeel Publishing is "The Older I Get, The Less I Care," and she is a contributing author to "Laughing Out Loud" from Hallmark Books, "Humor for a Sister's Heart" from Howard Publishing, and "Mug of Woe," an independently published book award winner! Her cartoons were also featured in the collaborative book, "New York City, Real and Imagined," a book by artists about New York City.

We had 12 members attend a very interesting presentation by Teresa Roberts Logan. Teresa brought with her a wide variety of her own personal journals as examples and talked/answered questions about Journaling. She discussed various glues used to adhere materials to the journal pages, Mod Podge, Elmer's Glue Sticks, and Acrylic Gel Medium were listed as her top three preferences for adhesion. The journals are used by her to record her thoughts and feelings about virtually any topic that comes to her mind at the time. She sometimes carries small journals with her and a pouch with pencils, markers, glue sticks, and scissors in the event the mood strikes her to do an entry. Virtually any material or object is fodder for being used in a journal entry. She was adamant that the journal is a personal record, NOT a finished work of art. Thinking we have to have a polished work is actually a hindrance to effective and meaningful journaling. Overall the demonstration was enlightening, stimulating and fun. PWSVA April 2012 Meeting Summary!

April 22nd 2012 at 2pm at The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, Hampton VA.

The CHALLENGE was: Breaking the Law! Violate at least one rule of composition in your painting and be prepared to explain what you did and if you'd like, "why."  Feel free to invoke the "artistic license" rule if you would prefer not to explain why. Below are some links to help you if needed.

Meeting Summary: 14 people braved the weather to come to the meeting. We had an unexpected (meaning I forgot) demonstration by local artist and watercolor guru: Jim Dees. He talked and showed us how to do a portrait in watercolor. This was an extension of Jim's attending the VWS sponsored watercolor workshop last week with juror and artist Dan Smith, at CHTAC. Jim's subject in the workshop was local artist and VWS Vice President Dave Sorenson. The demo Jim did was another portrait of Dave Sorenson. Jim discussed how the workshop has affected him and showed some of the techniques he learned from Dan Smith. Everyone seemed to enjoy it immensely. After the demonstration several of the attendees who also went to the VWS Workshop showed and talked about the work produced in the workshop. You can see some of the pictures and bits of Jim Dees demonstration by clicking on this link.

About The Arts Center In Orange: (from their website):

Our Mission
The mission of The Arts Center In Orange is to increase the quality of life in our community by promoting an appreciation for fine contemporary arts in diverse styles and ideologies. This is done by providing: a forum to promote artistic excellence; scholarship and education; a venue for artists and artisans to work, teach, exhibit and sell work; and a place for the community to learn skills, and to participate in and enjoy the arts.

Organizational History
Established in 1997, The Arts Center began by offering classes and having small gallery shows in a series of buildings leased to us at reduced rates. In 2000 Bob Morin, a local businessman, donated a 10,000 sq-ft building on Main Street to The Arts Center. We renovated approximately 3500 sq-ft, and began operations here in February of 2001. Since that time we have seen our programs and community involvement expand dramatically.

Our Programs
The Arts Center now houses a large gallery and gallery shop, classrooms, and The Orange Studio. The gallery provides exhibit space to display the work of emerging artists in eight shows annually. Virginia artists stock the gallery shop with fine contemporary art, pottery, sculpture, fiber art, glassware, metalwork and jewelry. Classes offered for children and adults include drawing, painting, clay, stained glass, basketry and a variety of other arts and crafts. The Orange Studio is an Arts Center program for adult artists with mental illness and/or learning disabilities. The Arts Center provides these artists with studio space, art supplies and artistic support for the creation of their work. Artists participating in the program are gaining recognition, exhibiting nationally. When their work is sold, half of the proceeds go to the artist, and the other half helps to fund the program. The Arts Center also organizes public art projects (several of which can be viewed around town), free film fests and open studio tours, and offers community outreach to serve children, seniors and others (over 5,000 to date) who, due to age, income or handicap, would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the arts.
